Functions Of the muscular System
Visceral Muscle: (stomach, intestines,blood vessels)
Cardiac Muscle:
Skeletal Muscle-
- weakest of all muscular systems
- Makes organs contract to move substances through the organ
- Controlled by unconscious part of the brain
- Smooth appearance
Cardiac Muscle:
- Found only in the heart
- Responsible for pumping blood throughout the body
- Involuntary muscle
- Self-simulation
- Cardiac muscle considered to be autorhythmic or intrinsically controlled
- Cells in cardiac muscle tissue are strained therefore making them appear to have light and dark stripes when viewed with microscope
- Striations indicate muscle cell is very strong, unlike muscles
- Cell of cardiac muscle branched X or Y shaped cells tightly connected by special junctions called intercalated disks
- Intercalated disks make up of fingerlike projections from two neighboring cells that interlock & provide a strong beond between cells
Skeletal Muscle-
- Only voluntary muscle tissue in the human body-it's controlled consciously
- Speaking, walking, or writing all require skeletal muscle
- Contract to move parts of the body closer to the bone that muscle is attached to
